Whenever I am looking to come up with something different for a meal, I like to turn to what they now call a charcuterie board. We use to call it a platter of cold cuts and buns.
I remember as a child going with my mother every Saturday on the bus, downtown to the butchers. It sure was a real experience. Nothing much happened but something maybe that now a days the kids wouldn’t understand. Going on a bus, I mean a bus all the way downtown. Those days we didn’t have two car families, or huge local grocery stores with prepared foods, frozen meals, or ordering on line, WHAT is that? There was all this fresh meat in the refrigerators and this butcher had straw all over the floors. We use to like to slide on it. But he best part of going there as a child was that we were always treated to a hot dog. For a child that was fun in those days. When I think back, what was all that straw all over the floor for? Didn’t matter at the time, it was something to look forward to. It will be something I’ll always remember.
I know it may be difficult to understand how this can relate to a simple meal. It was the beginning for me, to appreciate not only the time with my mother, but how to shop for the essentials of a meal. What to look for, where to look for it and how much to buy. As a child of course you do not observe that closely, or even care but it gave me the understanding that you had to go from time to time, to certain places to buy certain things, and prepare these things you purchased, so you could eat.
Times were much simpler then and for those times, we didn’t have a long list of all the things that we should avoid for different reasons. Probably because no one was aware of the fact that they were harmful to some. Where would you go now a days to find straw on the floor? I mean really, how sanitary is that? Back then we children just didn’t care. We were out having fun. It was what it was and the way things were done.
