I was a bit leary about doing this table. Purchasing it at an auction for a reasonable price it was worth a shot.
This was the table before. Not a bad little table and it looked easy to do. The first person to see this table was my hairdresser, Carmen. The Mayor had gone to pick it up after telling Carmen about it. So he was curious to see what we had purchased at an auction, something he has never done. When he saw it he couldn’t believe it, a solid wood table for next to nothing. When I told him I was going to refinish it, again he was curious as to what I was going to do. Just saying ” I hope your going to keep the top like this. ” Which I already knew, that’s what I wanted to do. Though I never know when I start a project what the end result will be.
I asked the Mayor to strip the top because I wanted to stain it in a darker colour. The paint will stick onto a surface if it is a bit rough. As the Mayor was in the process of all of this he discovered that the bottom would not sand. Meaning that no matter how big the sander and rougher the sandpaper, that finish would not be destroyed. We have no idea what kind of finish it was. When I found out I was not upset because I had just started to use another line of paint called Mineral Fusion and they have a product called Grip. Well it works really well, after prepping the table I coated it with the grip. Once dried it worked like a charm. I started to paint and have’t looked back.
Using 2 coats of the Fusion Mineral paint, Lichen which is such a beautiful colour, then I dried brushed the table with Fusion Mineral paint, Bayberry a darker green. It looks gorgeous. To finish it off, I applied 3 coats of the Fusion Mineral Top Coat. It does work well and the table looks really good.
This table was purchased on a whim and I wasn’t too thrilled with it. The price was right so I thought that I could perk it up a bit. I think it turned out really well and am pleased that I can and will be using it. Carmen, I hope you approve because as you see in the end I named this piece after you.
Sometimes, it’s those purchases made on a whim that often turn out better than we thought. I’ve been going through a similar experience with my decor (updating a lot of it with paint) and I am loving the results. It often pays to take those little style risks – especially when it’s easy on the pocket book. Loved the final results of your DIY!

You are so right on taking those risks and those are usually the ones we love and everyone wants to know how we did it. Keep up the good work and have fun doing it.

Stripping the top was a very smart move. It gives the table so much more interest and character. And I love the new color you have painted it.
