Westdale – A Coastal Mirror

IMG_6510I found this mirror at an auction and immediately thought of ocean breezes and knew what I wanted to do with it.  Someone might have looked at it and thought to throw it away, it was not a pretty sight.  Like with a lot of garage sale finds you have to have a either vision for a piece or a good imagination.  I had purchased a new product and was anxious to give it a try.  This was a perfect way to do it and at the same time update this mirror. So glad I did because I’m so pleased with the results.

The product is called Saltwash.  You can mix it with any paint.  I used ASCP Aubusson Blue, Country Grey and Louie Blue.  Now I have to say I’m starting to paint the way I cook.  By sight and by feel.   It has worked very well for my cooking and so far for my painting.  Anyway, I poured a little of each paint into 3 small containers and added some Saltwash into each.  Enough to make the mixture like a cake batter.  I then proceeded to dab each colour onto to the mirror kind of globby like, placing the different colours here and there. When all of this started to dry, I smoothed out the peaks that been formed when dabbing the paint onto the mirror and painted it white with ASCP Pure White .  When dried I sanded the entire mirror and applied ASCP clear wax.  The end result is what you see.

It has had quite a transformation.  Proving to rethink what you may want to discard as garbage.

Thank you Diana. I love the product. The funny thing was I decided, as you can see on the blog, my hand at some abstract art on canvas. So instead of gesso or gel on the canvas I mixed up some of the salt wash ( into my paint and used it,FABULOUS!) Gave a nice texture to the painting. I think you’ll like it.
Thank you for commenting. Oh, can you tell me how to link back to you so if you decide to feature me you are able. to. I just don’t know how to do that.

It definitely has a marine vibes and a summer look. Being new at some of this DIY stuff, I would not have thought to combine the 2 blues and a gray; great effect!
