Durham, Our First Suite

IMG_6181This dresser was part of a bedroom suite which we donated.  It was time for a change but we kept this dresser for storage.  I think it is what you call vintage. It’s hard for me to imagine that it could possibly be vintage because it was part of the first bedroom suite that the Mayor and I purchased.  Vintage to me is something much older but I guess not.

It was made by the Kroehler Company Of Canada and purchased in Durham, Ontario.  Such well made furniture, all wood, it was a shame to have to let it go.  Durham has been sitting in the basement for a while waiting for a transformation and boy did it ever get one.  As in all of my other projects, the hold up was because I didn’t know what colour to paint it.  Finally I decided on ASCP Paris Grey but not just this one shade of grey.  I ended up mixing some other colours with it and blending them together to achieve the end result.  This is what I did.

I first painted the base with 2 coats of ASCP French Linen.  I then mixed ASCP 2 parts Paris Grey with 1 part Graphite, applying this as a wash after the second coat of French Linen dried.  Dabbing this coat a little with a wet cloth to slightly expose the French Linen underneath.  When this coat dried I next applied a wash with ASCP Paris Grey, blending as I went along.  After this coat dried I started to apply ASCP Graphite dry brushing it but also blending it to the other colours with water if and when the colours weren’t blending by dry brushing.  Next I started to apply ASCP Old White in the exact same way.  Finishing off with dry brushing in the Old White to highlight the detail.  The end result was even surprising to me.  I had created a finish that looked like slate or stone.  I loved it.  I slightly dressed it and applied AS clear wax.  The only thing I’m still debating on is whether or not to apply white wax on the handles.  Lots of time to decide.
