French Toast Sandwich

Going to out of the way places for breakfast is a real treat for us.  Love the little Mom and Pop restaurants.  Food is generally good, fantastic service and at all at a reasonable price.  When we go somewhere different we get to try different items which is great.  I  usually get some ideas for my blog this way.  I love to try and recreate my version of what I have had.  The last place we went to I had a French Toast Sandwich on the menu.  It was delicious and instead of the fries, I switched it up for a salad.

So guess what I’m going to blog about today?  You got it, my version of that sandwich.

Monte Cristo Sandwiches, Iced Coffee, Daves Stuff 001Take 10 pieces of bread and spread them with mayo and mustard on both sides.

Monte Cristo Sandwiches, Iced Coffee, Daves Stuff 002Followed by placing a slice of cheese, your choice, on each piece of bread and…

Monte Cristo Sandwiches, Iced Coffee, Daves Stuff 004Place top and bottom pieces together.

Monte Cristo Sandwiches, Iced Coffee, Daves Stuff 006Wrap in saran wrap very tight.

Monte Cristo Sandwiches, Iced Coffee, Daves Stuff 007Place in a pan with another pan on top and with weights on top of the second pan.  A cast iron skillet would be ideal, and place for 2- 6 hours in the refrigerator.

Heat a fry pan with a few glugs of olive oil.

Monte Cristo Sandwiches, Iced Coffee, Daves Stuff 011Remove from the saran wrap and dip the sandwiches one at a time into a batter of 4 eggs, a pinch of salt, , a half of tablespoon of vanilla and 4 tablespoons of milk.  Sometimes I also add a sprinkling of cinnamon into the batter.  Mix well.   Dip the sandwiches for a couple minutes on each side.

Monte Cristo Sandwiches, Iced Coffee, Daves Stuff 012Next place them into the fry pan.  I like to use a non stick one.  Making sure to cook the sandwiches at a lower heat so they don’t burn while the cheese is melting.  It is also a good idea to cover the sandwiches while cooking.  This helps the cheese melt faster.

When one side is nicely golden brown, flip it over and brown the other side.

Monte Cristo Sandwiches, Iced Coffee, Daves Stuff 013Remove from pan and cut.  My preference is in two, sprinkle with icing sugar and serve.

RECIPE

INGREDIENTS

Oil And Butter For Frying

BATTER

4 Eggs, Beaten

2 Tablespoons Milk

1/2 Tablespoon Vanilla

Olive Oil

1/2 Tablespoon Butter, Melted For Frying (Opt,)

Sprinkling Of Salt

SANDWICHES

10 Thick Slices Bread ( Challah)

20 Slices Of Good Melting Cheese

Slices Black Forest Ham

Fruit, (Opt.)

Icing Sugar, (Opt.)

PREPARATION

On the bread slices place some mayo and mustard then the sliced cheese and next the sliced ham.  Put two pieces of bread with the works together.  Wrap each sandwich individually and tightly in saran wrap.  Place them in a pan with another pan on top and then weigh it down with heavy items.  Cast iron skillets are perfect.  Leave for up to 6 hours in the fridge.

Heat a fry pan with olive oil.

Into a bowl add eggs, milk, vanilla, salt and beat well.  Take one sandwich at a time and dip each side into the egg mixture for a minute or so.  Next place into the heated pan and fry at a lower heat with a lid on top until each side is nicely browned.  Repeat until all sandwiches are done, keeping the browned ones warm in the oven, at a low heat.  Serve immediately.

ENJOY!
